A young princess, wanting to experience a day without any of her royal responsibilities, finds herself in the middle of Rome after running away. As she spends time on the town with journalist Joe Bradley, the two find themselves in love when she realizes she must return to her royal responsibilities even though she must leave him behind.
Overall I enjoyed this movie. I'll admit, it wasn't as romantic as I'd expected. I guess I expected a cuter story, although the story wasn't bad. I liked that it all took place within the span of 3 days and it didn't feel rushed. I enjoyed watching the relationship between Joe and Ann develop. The ending wasn't my favorite. I understand that she has responsibilities and he has his job to do, but part of me was really hoping for a happier ending. It reminded me too much of the ending of La La Land as that movie didn't end very happily (or at least the way I wanted it to) either. However I think that both Hepburn and Peck did a great job in this movie. While the movie was completely what I'd expected, I would recommend it and I really liked it.

A popular silent film actor is forced to retire as talkies become popular and the studio looks for fresh faces. As he tries to figure out what to do with his life, he is faced with hardships and is too stubborn to let go of his pride.
This movie was a rollercoaster. It started out fine, and then it got really depressing in the middle. It was kind of hard to watch, but the story also pulled me in enough to keep me from quitting. I wouldn't say that I loved this film, but it was an interesting movie. It was almost like a much sadder, silent version of Singin' in the Rain. I was curious to see how a modern version of a silent film would turn out, and I think that the film turned out pretty well. I liked how even though the movie was mostly silent, some sound aside from the music was incorporated into it. Not to mention how adorable the dog was, I think part of the reason I watched the film in its entirety was because of him. Typically it's kind of difficult for me to sit through a silent film without getting bored. However even though this one stressed me out a lot, I wasn't bored once, and I think the fact that it has a bit of suspense contributed to that. Overall I thought it was a well-made film and I would recommend it to anyone who wants to watch a silent film but has trouble sitting through the originals and classics. After being forced to replace their drummer, a group of four young guys in a band called The Oneders (later renamed The Wonders) begin to gain fame in their hometown. The band begins to gain more popularity after releasing their first single. As they become nationwide teen idols, they get caught up in the whirlwind of being famous and the tensions that go along with fame.
I really enjoyed this movie. I had seen parts of it a couple of years ago, but I hadn't seen the film in its entirety. While the story is generally a retelling of the story of the Beatles, it was still a fun movie. I really liked the soundtrack, even though the film is dominated by the title track. Almost every song made me want to get up and dance and had that signature 60's sound. Tom Hanks did a great job with this film. I liked how it showed what being in band is really like. There's arguing and tension, but there is also joy and excitement. It showed all elements and did so by showing the types of people there are in show business. While I didn't like Jimmy as a character, I think that he is essential to the story in order to show how success can go to your head, especially if you're already arrogant in the first place. Aside from him, I loved all of the main characters in this film. I felt sorry for the bass player, as his character doesn't really have a name but is one of the best in the movie. His character seems overlooked, he is sweet and adorable and I just wanted to hug him all the time, yet he barely gets any attention. Guy is the star of the film, and rightfully so. I was rooting for him pretty much the whole time and I was glad to see him succeed. Lenny was another enjoyable character. I really liked his goofy personality and I think that his humor added to the fun atmosphere of the film. The film in general was funny and I felt like I was a part of the group, sharing their excitement and frustration. On another note, Liv Tyler's character Faye is underrated. The way she told Jimmy off was such great and I wanted to jump right into the film and give her a round of applause for saying what I felt like everyone was thinking (generally speaking, anyway). I also liked how at the end, there was a summary of what happened to each of the characters. This is normally only something seen in movies based on true stories, so I thought it was cool to have that at the end of a completely fiction film. I was kind of disappointed that Jimmy got a happy ending with a successful career, I wanted to see him fail. Overall I loved this movie, and I honestly might even consider it a top 10 film for me. I would definitely recommend it if you're looking for a fun music movie to watch. Newspaper editor Walter Burns tries to stall his ex-wife from leaving town and getting married. As he tries to convince her to work for his newspaper again, she finds herself caught in the middle of an intense criminal case. Her fiancé keeps getting arrested at the arrangement of Burns as he continues to try and prevent them from leaving town.
Overall I enjoyed this movie. I kept going back and forth between liking and disliking each character, but in the end I liked both Hildy and Walter. As I was watching the film, I was never sure how I wanted it to end, but I was happy with how everything turned out. I think out of all of the characters, Hildy was my favorite. I liked her personality as a character and that she was both serious and humorous. Going into this film, I wasn't really sure what to expect, but the story was pretty good and I liked that the romance was balanced with the action rather than one being more focused on than the other. I also liked how this movie showed the other side of journalism and exposed it. It showed how far some journalists are willing to go in order to get a story. It also showed how far some politicians are willing to go in order to win votes and stay in office, and I liked how it commented on this issue as it is still relevant. I would watch this movie again and I would recommend it for anyone who is looking for an interesting drama that isn't really long and keeps the story exciting. In order to beat her sister in a scavenger hunt, Irene Bullock seeks out a "forgotten man" named Godfrey at a riverside dump. She ends up hiring Godfrey as the family's new butler. Her sister resents him and tries everything she can to get him fired, as Irene falls in love with Godfrey. However Godfrey is more focused on doing well at his job than he is on Irene, which causes drama.
I ended up enjoying this movie more than I expected I would.. I liked the story a lot, and even though the Bullock family is crazy, they didn't annoy as much as I thought they would. I especially liked Godfrey as a character. I liked that he was humble and he just wanted to be the best he could at his job. I also liked that he didn't forget about his friends at the dump and focused his efforts there in the end. He also saved the Bullock family from losing everything, despite the way some of them had treated him. I was surprised that I didn't really enjoy the love story aspect of the movie, as I usually do in other movies. However this time I was just annoyed by it. While I thought Irene as a character was alright, I was kind of annoyed with her presence and her drama. I was also kind of upset about the ending. Again, I was surprised that I didn't like the ending, as I usually love happy endings like that. I would have liked an alternative happy ending, focusing on his project with the helping the men from the dump. One thing that I really liked was the opening credits (pictured below). I'd never seen them done that way before, and I thought it was both interesting and pretty. Overall I liked this movie, although I wouldn't say it is one of my all time favorites. Two baseball players, Dennis Ryan (Frank Sinatra) and Eddie O'Brien (Gene Kelly) try to balance baseball with a career in show-business and a love life. When a new manager inherits the team, Eddie and Dennis are not happy, until Eddie meets her. As the team strives to win the pennant, Eddie must decide what he wants as a fan of the team falls in love with Dennis and tries to win his affections. I really enjoyed this movie. I wasn't too fond of Gene Kelly's character in this movie, but his performance was good and the character was tolerable. I loved Frank Sinatra's character in the movie. I liked Sinatra's character was kind of the underdog and that both Ryan and O'Brien got a happy ending. I loved Esther Williams' character. Especially how she wasn't afraid to show the guys how it's done and that made sure they knew she was in charge. I also liked her humor. The song and dance numbers were great as usual in a Donen film. I also thought it was cool that the final song of the movie was Sinatra and Kelly singing about their characters, as well as singing as their characters. It was interesting that the movie was set in 1908 rather than in the 40's. I enjoyed seeing the costumes and I loved the dresses the actresses wore. I loved the movie and would definitely watch it again. I would also recommend it. After returning home from a vacation, Regina Lampert is informed that her husband has been murdered. She is thrown into chaos as people are after her for a quarter of a million dollars her husband had possessed before he was killed. As she tries to find the money and stay alive, she falls in love, is lied to, and has to figure out who she can trust.
I enjoyed this movie more than I expected to. It seemed like it would be boring in the beginning, but it got really interesting. It almost felt like Donen was trying to remake Hitchcock's Vertigo though. Aside from that, I enjoyed all of the twists and turns in this movie. I didn't see any of it coming. Just when I thought I knew what was going on or who a character was, there was another twist. Typical of a Donen film, it had a happy ending, but I thought it worked well with the rest of the story. I didAdam goes to town in search of a wife to care for him and his 6 brothers. He marries Milly and while she does not like the idea when she finds out, she eventually grows fond of his brothers. She teaches them manners and how to court a lady. When the brothers go to a barn raising, they each fall in love with a girl from town. Figuring they will never be allowed to marry the girls after getting into a fight at the barn raising, they decide to kidnap the girls. This infuriates Milly and causes a fight between her and Adam that leads him to live in a cabin alone for months. He eventually returns after finding out Milly had a baby. Each of the boys ends up getting married to the girl he kidnapped.
I enjoyed this movie a lot more than I thought I would. While I wasn't a fan of all of the sexism in the movie, I understand that part of it was to make the movie historically accurate, as it was set in 1850 and the main characters had hardly ever talked to a woman. I didn't like the songs as much as I like songs from other Donen films, but they were still pretty good. This movie was a lot funnier than I expected, and I laughed way more and way harder than I thought I would. The two parts that really killed me were the "Lonesome Polecat" song (in the video below) and the part where Gideon is meowing outside of Alice's window. I didn't like Adam as a character. He is arrogant and he really got on my nerves. I loved Milly and how she wasn't afraid to call him out when he was being a jerk. I also really liked Gideon as a character. I didn't like how Milly forgave Adam so easily at the end, but I was happy that the other brothers got a happy ending. Overall I enjoyed the movie and I would watch it again, especially when I need a laugh. . A brother and sister, famous for their onstage dancing and productions, travel to England to perform. Arriving in England during the week of the royal wedding, romance is in the air. While on foreign shores, they each fall in love. As they balance their careers and new romances, they must decide whether to settle down and break up their act or continue with show business. and leave their lovers behind. The sets in this movie were beautiful, as were the costumes. There was a lot of color in the film, particularly the color yellow. The dancing was fantastic, especially in regards to Fred Astaire. It was interesting that the main characters were siblings, as typically the two main characters are love interests. I enjoyed this movie for many reasons. I loved the sets, particularly in the "I Left My Hat in Haiti" dance number (included below). I think that was my favorite scene in the movie. I also loved when Fred Astaire was dancing on the walls and the ceiling of the hotel room. The costumes were also very pretty, especially the dresses that the actresses wore. The story was interesting, and I wasn't bored at any point during the film. I thought that the movie as a whole was creative and I would recommend to anyone looking for a good 1950's musical to watch. In terms of my favorite musicals, I'd say this one ranks fairly high on my list. Three young women audition for the lead role in a theatre production after the lead actress quits. One is an aspiring dancer with extensive training, one has experience in performing, and one is the former dance partner of the director of the production. Meanwhile, the three young men in charge of this production fall in love with the girls. They struggle to decide who is best for the role until circumstances decide for them.
I really enjoyed this movie. The sets were very pretty, the songs were catchy, and the storyline was good. I thought the movie was artistic and I really liked some of the costumes as well as the dancing and other choices made by the director. I was happy with how the movie ended, even though it was a typical happy ending. I liked that aside from Debbie Reynolds, I wasn't familiar with any of the other cast members. I discovered new stars that I'd never heard of before but who are really talented. The dance sequences were great in themselves, and the settings of said sequences added even more to the movie and made it very pleasing to the eye in terms of colors and props. I feel like this film is kind of underrated, and I would definitely recommend it to people. |
AuthorHello fellow film lovers! Just a little bit about me: I love movies from the Old Hollywood era, especially musicals. In general, my movie taste is a bit all over the place. I don't really stick to one genre, as I just watch whatever looks interesting! I look forward to broadening my horizons in terms of film and reviewing them to the best of my ability in an honest way. Reading another passion of mine, and I'm frequently told I have an old soul, so expect to see a lot of older films being reviewed. I hope you can find what you need here! Archives
