After being forced to replace their drummer, a group of four young guys in a band called The Oneders (later renamed The Wonders) begin to gain fame in their hometown. The band begins to gain more popularity after releasing their first single. As they become nationwide teen idols, they get caught up in the whirlwind of being famous and the tensions that go along with fame.
I really enjoyed this movie. I had seen parts of it a couple of years ago, but I hadn't seen the film in its entirety. While the story is generally a retelling of the story of the Beatles, it was still a fun movie. I really liked the soundtrack, even though the film is dominated by the title track. Almost every song made me want to get up and dance and had that signature 60's sound. Tom Hanks did a great job with this film. I liked how it showed what being in band is really like. There's arguing and tension, but there is also joy and excitement. It showed all elements and did so by showing the types of people there are in show business. While I didn't like Jimmy as a character, I think that he is essential to the story in order to show how success can go to your head, especially if you're already arrogant in the first place. Aside from him, I loved all of the main characters in this film. I felt sorry for the bass player, as his character doesn't really have a name but is one of the best in the movie. His character seems overlooked, he is sweet and adorable and I just wanted to hug him all the time, yet he barely gets any attention. Guy is the star of the film, and rightfully so. I was rooting for him pretty much the whole time and I was glad to see him succeed. Lenny was another enjoyable character. I really liked his goofy personality and I think that his humor added to the fun atmosphere of the film. The film in general was funny and I felt like I was a part of the group, sharing their excitement and frustration. On another note, Liv Tyler's character Faye is underrated. The way she told Jimmy off was such great and I wanted to jump right into the film and give her a round of applause for saying what I felt like everyone was thinking (generally speaking, anyway). I also liked how at the end, there was a summary of what happened to each of the characters. This is normally only something seen in movies based on true stories, so I thought it was cool to have that at the end of a completely fiction film. I was kind of disappointed that Jimmy got a happy ending with a successful career, I wanted to see him fail. Overall I loved this movie, and I honestly might even consider it a top 10 film for me. I would definitely recommend it if you're looking for a fun music movie to watch.

Newspaper editor Walter Burns tries to stall his ex-wife from leaving town and getting married. As he tries to convince her to work for his newspaper again, she finds herself caught in the middle of an intense criminal case. Her fiancé keeps getting arrested at the arrangement of Burns as he continues to try and prevent them from leaving town.
Overall I enjoyed this movie. I kept going back and forth between liking and disliking each character, but in the end I liked both Hildy and Walter. As I was watching the film, I was never sure how I wanted it to end, but I was happy with how everything turned out. I think out of all of the characters, Hildy was my favorite. I liked her personality as a character and that she was both serious and humorous. Going into this film, I wasn't really sure what to expect, but the story was pretty good and I liked that the romance was balanced with the action rather than one being more focused on than the other. I also liked how this movie showed the other side of journalism and exposed it. It showed how far some journalists are willing to go in order to get a story. It also showed how far some politicians are willing to go in order to win votes and stay in office, and I liked how it commented on this issue as it is still relevant. I would watch this movie again and I would recommend it for anyone who is looking for an interesting drama that isn't really long and keeps the story exciting. In order to beat her sister in a scavenger hunt, Irene Bullock seeks out a "forgotten man" named Godfrey at a riverside dump. She ends up hiring Godfrey as the family's new butler. Her sister resents him and tries everything she can to get him fired, as Irene falls in love with Godfrey. However Godfrey is more focused on doing well at his job than he is on Irene, which causes drama.
I ended up enjoying this movie more than I expected I would.. I liked the story a lot, and even though the Bullock family is crazy, they didn't annoy as much as I thought they would. I especially liked Godfrey as a character. I liked that he was humble and he just wanted to be the best he could at his job. I also liked that he didn't forget about his friends at the dump and focused his efforts there in the end. He also saved the Bullock family from losing everything, despite the way some of them had treated him. I was surprised that I didn't really enjoy the love story aspect of the movie, as I usually do in other movies. However this time I was just annoyed by it. While I thought Irene as a character was alright, I was kind of annoyed with her presence and her drama. I was also kind of upset about the ending. Again, I was surprised that I didn't like the ending, as I usually love happy endings like that. I would have liked an alternative happy ending, focusing on his project with the helping the men from the dump. One thing that I really liked was the opening credits (pictured below). I'd never seen them done that way before, and I thought it was both interesting and pretty. Overall I liked this movie, although I wouldn't say it is one of my all time favorites. |
AuthorHello fellow film lovers! Just a little bit about me: I love movies from the Old Hollywood era, especially musicals. In general, my movie taste is a bit all over the place. I don't really stick to one genre, as I just watch whatever looks interesting! I look forward to broadening my horizons in terms of film and reviewing them to the best of my ability in an honest way. Reading another passion of mine, and I'm frequently told I have an old soul, so expect to see a lot of older films being reviewed. I hope you can find what you need here! Archives
